ANGIE:
I am definitely a go getter.

Angie is a real patient who was taking NUCALA at the time of filming. GSK paid for her time and expenses to share her unique experiences. Results may vary.

ANGIE:
I’m a mom. I’m a wife. I’m also a swim and dive coach. Being around pools and water is really a big part of who I am.

ANGIE:
I noticed my breathing was kind of off when I exercised. You know, I just was feeling like I couldn't get a good breath and it was different than just being out of breath.

ANGIE:
One night I was at home, and I just could not breathe. They ended up admitting me in the hospital.

ANGIE:
I was on oxygen. I was on breathing treatments.

ANGIE:
In those moments when you when, when…[sigh]…man, I tell you. You. You take breathing for granted.

ANGIE:
I just couldn’t recover. I would get winded doing things that I could normally do with no problem. Being on the pool deck was horrible. I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

ANGIE:
[I] didn’t realize how much coaching was an outlet for me until it wasn’t there.

ANGIE:
My family is the most important thing in my life.

MATT:
For me, the scariest thing was waking up in the middle of the night and she's having a full-blown asthma attack. I mean it's frightening to wake up and, and see her struggling to, to breathe and struggling to get ahold of an inhaler.

ANGIE:
[I] went from rescue inhaler to maintenance inhaler to a round of steroids, to another maintenance inhaler and then another round of steroids. I would feel jittery, I’m gaining weight, and I wasn't getting any better with my breathing.

ANGIE:
I said enough.
I had lost a piece of myself that I needed to get back. I wasn't afraid to be pushy. I felt like, “is this is going to be the rest of my life?” Because this is unacceptable.

ANGIE:
I had all these things going on and all these challenges and it came down to a simple blood test that led to me being diagnosed with severe eosinophilic asthma.

ANGIE:
I'm a problem solver. I'm like, “okay, great, we found the problem. Let's get a solution.”

ANGIE:
That was when we started talking about a biologic.
[Hey guys! You ready?]
Since I've been taking NUCALA, I'm back to normal life.

ANGIE:
[Press it down]
It was great to be back with the kids.
[Good! That looked good! Very nice!]

ANGIE:
I can get so into the moment that I just forget about whatever is going on around me. It’s awesome.

ANGIE:
It's great to be in a place where I don't have to think about my asthma all the time.

ONSCREEN TEXT:

Talk to your doctor before stopping any of your medications.

ANGIE:
For me, I was able to taper off the oral steroids, and I haven't had to take any oral steroids since I started NUCALA; September of 2020.

ANGIE:
As a family. It's allowed us to be able to do the things that we love to do.

ONSCREEN TEXT:
Results may vary.

MATT:
Once she got on NUCALA, we saw a big difference.

ANGIE:
I carry a much smaller purse now too (laugh) because I don’t have to have that big bag of inhalers.

ONSCREEN TEXT:
Results may vary.

ANGIE:
The only inhaler I have is my rescue inhaler in the event that something were to trigger an asthma attack.

ONSCREEN TEXT:
Results may vary.

ANGIE:
NUCALA has given me back what my asthma took away.

ONSCREEN TEXT:
Results may vary.

ANGIE:
It's allowed me to move closer to living the life that I want to live, and be the person who I want to be. It's a journey…

ANGIE:
…and a process.
[Oh! All right. Let’s try it again.]

ANGIE:
But I'm thankful that I was able to find NUCALA, to go through that process.

ANGIE:

Life before NUCALA (mepolizumab)

ONSCREEN TEXT:
Teri is a real patient who was taking NUCALA at the time of filming.
GSK paid for her time and expenses in sharing her unique experiences.

TERI:
It just felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest. That was one of the earlier onset signs of struggling to breathe.

TERI:
Over the next 7 years from that day, it was a constant struggle… breathing. The congestion, wheezing, asthma attacks. And it just kept progressing. If I wasn’t having an asthma attack, I definitely was always worried about having one. It really was kind of debilitating to me… as a mother, you know, as a wife, as a professional. I felt like I had to turn down a lot of work opportunities because of the problems I had with my breathing. At home it was difficult for me to go to my kids’ soccer games. And I missed a lot of moments in their lives where they would want me to be there… I couldn't be there. My husband and I enjoy dancing. That's how we, you know, connected. That was one of the things that, you know, bring us close together. And unfortunately, we couldn’t do that anymore.

DENNIS:
Do you remember that… I think it was Erica’s birthday.

TERI:
We were supposed to go dancing with them.

DENNIS:
And we were probably about, what, 50 percent into the drive?

TERI:
Yep.

DENNIS:
And the code word was given, right?

TERI:
Yep. “It's hot in here.”

DENNIS:
And that was the indication to turn around. Yeah, I used to dread that word, because there were times where you’d end up in the hospital was when that word was given.

TERI:
It had gotten to the point where I was going to the ER all the time. It was just like a vicious cycle of steroids, breathing treatments, and other medications that were temporary. It wasn’t solving any problems; it was just giving me a temporary relief. It was pretty frustrating.

Getting Diagnosed

ONSCREEN TEXT:
Teri is a real patient who was taking NUCALA at the time of filming.
GSK paid for her time and expenses in sharing her unique experiences.

TERI:
The turning point was when I was in the parking lot of the ER and didn’t have the breath to walk inside. I had to call 911 from the parking lot. I was sitting there thinking, oh my God, I'm gonna die here in the parking lot… And it was the worst day of my life.

TERI:
As soon as they let me go home, I went to see a pulmonologist, and I was literally crying, begging him, “please help me.” My doctor really took the time and listened to me and reviewed my medical history to look for an answer. He told me he thought he knew what was wrong with me. And he explained to me that he thought too many eosinophils may be contributing to my asthma. I had never heard of eosinophils before. I didn't even know that there were different types of asthma. He ran a blood test, and once the results came back, he diagnosed me with…

TERI:
…severe eosinophilic asthma. I think I jumped for joy that day [laughs] to hear the words, “I know what's wrong with you.”

TERI:
My doctor told me that being diagnosed with severe eosinophilic asthma meant that I was going to be a candidate for NUCALA. So, he gave me a pamphlet to read about the side effects. He told me about the things that could happen…

TERI:
…like serious allergic reactions, headaches, injection site reactions or back aches and fatigue, among other things, but we decided I would give it a try. He wanted to get me started right away, and he told me it wasn’t for when I have sudden breathing problems, but it was an injection taken…

Every 4 weeks

TERI:
…every four weeks, in addition to my inhalers.

ONSCREEN TEXT:
Sometimes, serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur hours or days later. NUCALA at home does not take the place of doctor’s visits. Results may vary.

TERI:
And then, once I got the injection, I had to sit and wait for about 30 minutes to make sure I didn't have any adverse reaction, which I didn't.

ONSCREEN TEXT:
Results may vary.

TERI:
I do not like needles at all, but when you've been through years and years of struggling to breathe, and the doctor says that it's delivered by injection, you don't care, you're like, you know what… I'm gonna tough it up and I'll be okay. My personal experience with NUCALA after that first injection…

ONSCREEN TEXT:
Studies showed varied improvements in lung function. Results may vary.

TERI:
I was doing pretty good… I stopped wheezing; I was breathing a whole lot better.

TERI:
For me, it was a new beginning.

DENNIS:
Now, how about that trip we took after you got on the medication?

TERI:
Oh, huh- huh, yep!

TERI:
When your sister’s wedding in Jamaica?  We had a good time.

DENNIS:
Yeah. Couldn't keep you off the beach. We were able to enjoy it. It was the first vacation we had in years.

TERI:
I'm grateful for that. You know, I was so overjoyed and with my family, we’ve been traveling more, going on more vacations, fishing, and gardening. I’m very grateful. Very grateful.
